What is Mindful Sleep Therapy and can it help me?

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

What is Mindful Sleep Therapy?
Mindful Sleep Therapy is a technique developed by Dr. Guy Meadows (PhD) to help prevent chronic insomnia. It combines a number of approaches such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and Meditation.  Mindful Sleep Therapy teaches you to accept and embrace your insomnia, allowing your brains natural sleeping ability to take control. It does this in the knowledge that once all fear, anger and pain surrounding poor sleep is removed so too will be the powerful grip that it has over you.
Insomnia sufferer’s lie in bed ‘trying’ to make themselves to sleep, unfortunately the more you try to make yourself sleep the further sleep goes away. By accepting and embracing your insomnia you are no longer ‘trying’ to sleep, instead you are accepting that your brain knows how to sleep and will do if you let it.

Can Mindful Sleep Therapy help me?
If you do any of the following habits then Mindful Sleep Therapy can help you.

1. Lie in bed awake at night trying, wanting and forcing yourself to sleep.

2. Lie in bed at night thinking of all of the past poor quality sleep that you have ever had.

3. Spend your days and nights imagining how bad your sleep is going to be in the future.

4. Lie in bed imagining how bad you will feel tomorrow if you do not sleep.

If you engage in any of these habits on a daily basis they are likely to be playing a key role in fueling your insomnia and keeping you awake at night. Mindful Sleep Therapy teaches you to abolish these habits and to achieve natural good quality regular sleep.
